Power asymmetries: leadership, participation, violence and representation. A gender perspective.
4 – 6 September 2022, MuT – Stintino (SS), Italy
CALL FOR PAPERS
One of the most persistent patterns in the distribution of power is that of inequalities between women and men. Gender – namely the set of roles, behaviors, and attitudes that societies define as appropriate for women and men – is the cause and the consequence of power relations, from the intimate sphere of the household to the highest levels of political decision-making. In other words, gender relations are power relations.
Nowadays, discriminations, prejudices, and violence shape the living conditions of millions of women who find themselves in a disadvantaged position in terms of access to political and economic power. Those power asymmetries endanger human rights, expose women to gender violence, embed social exclusion and poverty, and hinder the achievement of full autonomy of half of the population.
Parity is far from being achieved and according to the World Gender Gap Report 2022 it will take 132 more years before the gender gap is closed, globally.
This conference aims at analyzing gendered power relations in their different aspects, modalities and outcomes from a sociological perspective, and is organized around 5 panels:
- Power Asymmetries: The Political Dimension of Gendered Relations 2. Power Asymmetries: Stereotyped social representations of gender violence
- Gender and politics in Europe – Intersectional Perspectives
- Gender Representation in the Hybrid Media Ecosystem: Roles, Stereotypes, Social and Cultural Practices
- Socialization, Education and the Social Reproduction of Inequalities
Therefore, we welcome papers that focus on topics such as:
• Political cultures and women’s participation in political processes
• Women’s leadership
• The role of women in the public sphere
• Gendered social representations
• Gender socialization and gender-sensitive education
